University Malaya is committed towards improving our campus environment in its various aspects, and the university has the on-going mission to encourage, educate, motivate and train its students and staffs to be more environmentally friendly and responsible.
In line with this commitment, the Environmental Secretariat of University Malaya (UMCARES) was established on October 2009 as an official platform to achieve the universities' objectives in this regard. The main role of UMCARES is to ensure that environmental activities in the campus are coordinated more integratively and systematically, with sufficient institutional support.
Simply, the main objectives of UMCARES are three-pronged:
1. To create awareness amongst the UM campus community towards caring about the environment, and other issues pertaining to it.
2. To train, educate and incorporate sustainable lifestyle in campus.
3. To encourage cooperation between different entities, inside and outside of UM, in conducting environmental activities that are of benefit to the campus and nearby communities.
UM CARES considers itself as an organic and dynamic entity - where we try to operate the unit based on the on-going needs and concerns of the UM community. However, our ability to play our role is highly dependent on the contribution of its volunteers and the participation of the UM community in environmental activities.

 | At present, the administration of UM Cares consist of three individuals: 1. Ir. Assoc. Prof. Dr Aziz Raman (Chief Coordinator) 2. Dr Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad (Assistant Coordinator) 3. Miss Navarani (Administrator) Officially, UM Cares is positioned directly under the Vice-Chancellor's office, demonstrating the strong encouragement by the higher management to enhance UM's contribution towards environmental protection and sustainable development. |
Since our establishment at the end of 2009, UMCARES has conducted a number of environmental projects. We have more exciting projects lined up for 2010, and we encourage ALL MEMBERS OF THE UM COMMUNITY to to join us!
Together, we can make UM a better place and a good model of an environmentally sustainable community! All of us have our own unique role to play and we can begin from now...
