As a premier university in Malaysia, located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, UM joined hands with various other organizations in this wonderful moment of solidarity. The UM Earth Hour 2009 event was a bottom-up initiative; initiated by a group of volunteers (comprising of UM students and staffs) who would like to enhance UM's role in dealing with issue related environmental protection and social welfare. The main activities of the UM Earth Hour 2009 are as follows:(1) Officially encouraged residential colleges all over the UM main campus to turn off their lights between 8:30- 9:30 pm. (2) Organised a university-level event at a prominent location in the UM campus. This event was held from 7:30 - 10pm at the Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor Universiti Malaya (3) Used the UM Earth Hour event as the kicj-off platform to recruit students volunteers for UMCARES. The whole event was kindly sponsored by the university management, with some promotional materials contributed by WWF Malaysia.
